Using voice input

The microphone button in the message box listens to you. You can dictate a message, or talk with your assistant out loud.

Dictating a message

  1. Open a conversation with any assistant
  2. Hold the microphone until it starts listening, then let go and keep speaking. While it listens it says Listening…
  3. Choose Stop and keep text when you are done: your words are in the message box
  4. Fix anything that came out wrong, then send

Your speech is turned into text on your own computer.

Talking out loud

Tap the microphone to talk with your assistant out loud. It listens, answers aloud, and listens again. Tap it again to stop. In Settings, under Voice and audio, the Talk tab sets how a spoken conversation sounds.

Hearing a reply read aloud

Each reply has Read aloud beside its copy button. In Settings, under Voice and audio, you choose the voice your assistants speak with; that voice is made in the cloud. On a Mac with Apple silicon you can switch on Spoken replies instead: every reply then comes with audio, made on this computer by the VoiceStudio app. VoiceStudio does not run on Windows.

Choosing the microphone

The small arrow beside the microphone chooses which microphone to use: System default, or any other microphone connected to your computer.

The microphone button isn't there

  • Permission. The first time you use it, your computer asks for microphone access, and on macOS for speech recognition too. If you declined, grant it in your system settings and restart the app.
  • No microphone. If your computer has no input device available, the control stays hidden.
